Kayaking on Milos: Is the Tsigrado and Gerakas Tour Worth It?

Updated October 22, 2026 · 5 min read

The short answer. Yes, if you can swim confidently and want to see the south coast from the water. The Tsigrado and Gerakas beach kayaking tour costs €60, lasts 3.5 hours and is rated 5 from 559 reviews, the third most-reviewed trip on the island. It is a good deal compared with the boat trips, which start at €85 and mostly head for Kleftiko. It is not suitable for children under 10, non-swimmers, pregnant women or anyone with back or heart problems.

What you do

The tour starts at Fyriplaka beach on the south coast and follows the volcanic shoreline, past small bays, into caves and around tiny islands. According to the itinerary:

  • a 30-minute safety briefing on the beach
  • 15 minutes of paddling to Tsigrado, then 30 minutes of free time to swim and snorkel
  • 30 minutes of paddling on to Gerakas, then 20 minutes of swimming and snorkelling and 35 minutes of free time with a local snack
  • about 40 minutes of paddling back to Fyriplaka

That adds up to about an hour and a half of paddling, with the rest spent on beaches and in the briefing. The description adds that, if the weather allows, the guide visits a hidden volcanic beach, and that you might meet a sea turtle. That is a possibility and not a promise.

What is included

The listing includes a double sit-in kayak with a rudder, a life jacket, a waterproof bag for each kayak and a waterproof case for your phone, a snorkelling mask and tube, an action camera for each kayak, homemade snacks and a 0.5-litre bottle of water. Hotel pick-up and drop-off are also included. The guides speak English and Greek. Experienced paddlers can ask for a single kayak.

Because most kayaks are doubles, you may be paired with another participant or a guide for the whole trip. If you dislike sharing, read this as part of the price.

Who should not book it

The booking page is explicit about who is not suitable: children under 10, pregnant women, people with back problems, people with heart problems, non-swimmers, and people over 200 cm (6 ft 6 in) or 130 kg. Children aged 10 to 14 must be accompanied by an adult and can only join the family option. Alcohol and drugs are not allowed.

Those restrictions tell you something about the effort. You paddle for about an hour and a half in total, on the open sea, and you swim and snorkel as well. If anyone in your group would not enjoy that, a boat trip is a better fit.

Why Tsigrado and Gerakas

Both beaches are hard to reach otherwise. Travel guides describe Tsigrado as reached by a narrow path and a wooden ladder, with a tricky descent. Gerakas is described as reachable only by boat. A kayak gets you to both without the climb, and for a lower price than a boat.

The south coast is also where boat operators go when the north wind is strong: one catamaran listing says it may switch to a south-coast route with swim stops at Gerakas, Kleftiko and Tsigrado in that case. That does not guarantee the kayak tour runs on any day, because the operator can still reschedule it, but it explains why the south coast is a sensible choice on a windy day.

They do not compete. Kayak if you want a short, active morning or afternoon; take the boat for Kleftiko, which is out of reach of the kayak tour. Our guide to Kleftiko by sailing boat or catamaran compares those trips. Add a land day too: see how to get to Sarakiniko.

Booking tips

The itinerary is subject to change, and weather can affect it. Bring swimwear and a towel, as the listing says. Free cancellation applies up to 24 hours before the start. For other options on the water, browse things to do in Milos. Check dates and prices for the Tsigrado and Gerakas kayak tour.
