How to Get to Sarakiniko on Milos – and When It Looks Best

The short answer. Sarakiniko is on the north coast of Milos, about ten minutes by car from the port of Adamas. You can reach it by bus, hire car, scooter or on foot, or as one stop on a guided tour. Whatever you choose, plan for no shade, a car park that fills in July and August, and a wind that can spoil the swim. If you only want to see it once, a tour that includes it is simpler than working out transport.

Sarakiniko is the pale, wind-sculpted rock that makes Milos look like another planet. Tour listings call it the “lunar landscape” and one of the most photographed places in the Cyclades. It is a place to wander over smooth white rock and drop into a sheltered inlet, not a beach with sunbeds and a taverna.

Ways to get there

By bus. Milos has a single bus company, and timetables change with the season. We have not verified whether or how often a bus runs to Sarakiniko, so ask at the bus stop in Adamas or at your hotel on arrival rather than building a day around a time you read online.

By car or scooter. About ten minutes from Adamas, and a similar distance from Plaka, the island’s capital. There is a marked car park, which becomes crowded in peak season. If you want a space, arrive early or late in the day. A car also opens up the rest of the island, so read our guide on Milos on land: Plaka, the catacombs and Klima if you are still deciding. If you decide to drive, you can compare car hire for Milos.

On foot. Walking from Adamas is possible: the straight-line distance is just over 2 km and the road is longer; allow about 45 minutes each way (our estimate, not measured). In the heat of summer, with no shade on arrival, it is a better idea in the morning than at midday.

On a tour. Several land tours include Sarakiniko, the full-day jeep safari among them; three compared:

The e-bike tour limits riders to 125 kg and runs in groups of up to 15. The private tour is the only one of these three limited to your own group; its price is a group price of €280, against €70 and €88 per person for the other two.

Boat trips also pass the area. The full-day Milos and Polyaigos sailboat tour lists Sarakiniko as a photo stop and pass-by, not a swim. If you want a swim from the boat, ask the operator before booking, because the stops are decided on the day.

When it looks best

Early or late. There is no shade at Sarakiniko, and the pale rock reflects the sun. Midday in July is hot, bright and crowded. The car park is also easier early or late in the day; guides advise arriving at those hours to find a space. If you want the sunset, the time shifts a lot over the season. We calculated it for Milos in local summer time: around 8:20 p.m. in mid-May, 8:45 p.m. in late June, 7:30 p.m. in mid-September and 6:45 p.m. in mid-October.

Mind the wind. Sarakiniko faces north. The small-group yacht tour lists Sarakiniko on its round route in mild weather and on its north route when southerly winds prevail; when the north wind is up, it takes a south-coast route instead. That is a good signal for visitors by land: on a strong meltemi day, which is most common in July and August, the sea at Sarakiniko may be rough even when the south coast is calm. Check the forecast the evening before, and if the north coast is blowing, save Sarakiniko for another day.

What to bring. The water is clear and you can swim from the rocks. Wear shoes you can walk in over uneven rock, and pack water, food, a hat and sunscreen, because nothing is organised on the spot.

How long to give it

An hour is enough for most people, and that is also what the e-bike tour allows. If anyone in your group struggles with heat or uneven ground, keep the visit short and early, because there is no shade.

Combine it with something else. Sarakiniko pairs well with Plaka and the catacombs on the same morning. If you are planning the boat days, see our guides to Kleftiko by sailing boat or catamaran and the sunset cruise from Adamas, or browse things to do in Milos.
